12 Simple Home Improvements That Transform Your Home

12 Simple Home Improvements That Transform Your Home

If you want to update your house but don’t want to spend loads of time or money on big projects, then consider our simple home improvement ideas to transform your house for less.

Here is the list:

Paint old furniture

Give old furniture a new lease of life by giving it a makeover. Brighten up an old side table or distress a set of draws to give them a rustic, vintage feel. You could paint all the doors in your house instead of replacing them, just ensure you keep it consistent and choose a colour that works for every room. Make sure to do a bit of research first, so you avoid mistakes others have made.

Recycle old wine crates

One quirky way to save money is to recycle old wine crates. These can be used as side tables or footstools, or if you add a cushion, they can create extra seating for your living room.

Upgrade your bed

You don’t need to buy a whole new bed to give your bedroom the facelift it needs. Consider investing in a new headboard, or painting an old one, or buy a new mattress or duvet. Even just buying a new duvet cover, or adding cushions and a throw to your bed will freshen up the room. Stick to one colour scheme and add some wall art, lamps or new furniture to match.

12 Simple Home Improvements That Transform Your Home - upgrade your bed

Upgrade your lighting

Modern lighting can completely change the feel of a room, whether you opt for a soft glow for the living room or brighter spot lights for the kitchen. Switch to energy saving bulbs which can be cheaper in the long run, and are better for the environment.

Hire professional cleaners

Addressing stains as soon as they occur can reduce the need for professional cleaners, but if you’re starting to think your whole house is looking a bit lack lustre, don’t immediately buy new carpets, but consider hiring professional cleaners. They can freshen up the appearance of your whole house and prevent you buying a whole new set of carpets. Make sure to shop around and ask for a few quotes so you are getting the most for your money.

Test your upholstery skills

Try modernizing furniture by adding new fabric and making your own unique piece. There are countless tutorials on YouTube to guide you, or you could follow an upholstery guide. Make sure not to buy fabric that costs more than a new chair would and always buy extra fabric just in case.

Upgrade door handles

This suggestion may seem small and insignificant but upgrading your door hands can make a big difference to the feel of a house. Again try to keep it consistent throughout your house and choose a style that works in all your rooms.

Repair your roof

Improve the appearance of your home from the outside by repairing the roof or opting for a new roof style entirely. Try to stay in keeping with your area, but a new roof can transform a home. Search for roofing repair companies near me for a quote today.

Decorate the walls

If you’ve been meaning to put up artwork and family photos since you moved in, then don’t put it off any longer. Decorating the walls can make your house feel more personal and unique.

Add storage to your hallway

Often the hallway is a more neglected room of the house so adding a few personal touches can make your home more inviting, after all this is the first room of your house guests will see. Adding a storage unit, is a great functional use of the space and will help you to keep your shoes and coats neat and tidy. Add a tray for dropping keys in, and a notepad and pen will always come in handy too.

Make your fireplace more energy efficient

It’s no secret that homes lose a considerable amount of heat from fireplaces, but how can you prevent it? Opt instead for a gas or wood-burning insert, which allows you to maintain the traditional feature, while saving a lot of energy.

Revamp your stairway

Add a touch of personality and drama to your staircase by adding more distinctive railings. You could even add embellishments to the wood to make your hallway a little more interesting and inviting.

Allen and Roth Lighting Customer Service: How to Get Support

Have you ever tried to contact Allen and Roth lighting customer service? Did you find it difficult to locate the right information? I recently tried to get a replacement globe for one of my Allen Roth Bristow lights. I had a surprisingly hard time locating the correct contact number.

When trying to find Allen Roth lighting customer service online, I came across a lot of conflicting information. The top few search results are from the Allen Roth window treatments website. Unfortunately, this won’t help you with lighting.

I did finally find an Allen Roth Lighting link that seemed promising. It even had a contact form. But it turned out to be a site dedicated to Allen Roth lighting that isn’t actually connected with the company.

My ordeal trying to contact customer support prompted me to put together this post. Hopefully, it will help others who are struggling with the same issue.

Contacting Allen and Roth Lighting Customer Service

In my search, I came across a few places where people mention getting replacement parts for their Allen Roth lighting. There are definitely some conflicting reports on dealing with Allen Roth customer service. To save you time, here are a few places where I found information that might be helpful.

The Allen + Roth Website

The Allen + Roth website allenandroth.com has almost no information about support or customer service. The only information I could locate is a Customer Care number (1.800.445.6937). It's provided in very small print at the bottom of the website. It turns out that this number is the same as the Lowe's customer service number.

Lowe’s Website

The Lowe’s website has instructions for returning an item. It also provides an email address and phone number for Customer Service. But I read a few comments that claim they did not receive replies to their email messages.

You can also text Lowe’s customer service at 1-704-313-1818. They may be able to point you in the right direction. If you’re not a fan of long phone calls or being put on hold, this is a really great option.

Lowe’s Customer Reviews

Multiple comments in the reviews for lighting on the Lowe’s website say that the 1-800 number I provided above worked well to obtain replacement parts. Comments claimed that customer service was helpful and that new shades came quickly. One reviewer expected to pay for their replacement shades, but they were replaced free of charge.

In the Bristow lighting Q&A section, I found a response from an Allen Roth representative which gave this number (800-554-6504) for their Customer Service department. This number is again different from the others I tracked down.

You should be careful when referencing numbers in the comments and reviews though. I found someone who was giving out the customer support number for a different company.

One reviewer needed replacement parts for their Vallymede pendant lights. The instruction manual came with directions to call Allen and Roth customer service. But they claim that they were referred back to Lowe’s customer service by Allen and Roth.

Other Websites Customer Reviews

I also found helpful comments from people on other websites.

One reviewer mentions that a sheet with instructions for getting replacement parts came in the box. He even supplied a picture! The number on his sheet (1-800-439-9800) is different than the one on the Allen and Roth website. Since this number came with the lights, it may be the best one to try.

But there were also some conflicting comments. Some reviewers say they were unable to get new shades from either Lowe’s or Allen and Roth.

Other Sources on the Web

I even found some comments related to customer service on an Allen Roth Lighting focused site. They said the best way to get help was to go through Lowe’s. Going through Lowe's customer service seems to be a popular solution. But it does conflict with some of the comments on the Lowe’s website that say to contact Allen and Roth.

Order Replacement Parts Directly

In some cases, you can order replacement parts for your Allen Roth lighting yourself. Look at this page for cords and shades available from Lowe’s.

Allen and Roth Lighting Customer Service: Final Verdict

After all my searching, I did not find a consensus on the best way to contact Allen and Roth lighting customer service.

The methods listed above seem to be the most common ways people managed to get replacement parts. Hopefully one of these methods will help you in your search for parts for your Allen Roth lighting.

To summarize, these are all the contact numbers I found in my search:

  • 1-800-445-6937 - Allen + Roth Customer Care, as well as Lowe’s Customer Service
  • 1-800-554-6504 - Allen + Roth Customer Service (found in comments)
  • 1-800-439-9800 - Supplied with Allen + Roth Bristow Lights
  • 1-704-313-1818 - To text Lowe’s Customer Service

How to Transform Your Flooring From Plain to Fabulous

Flooring is a major aspect of every room. If you've tried renovating a room  by changing furniture or decor and it hasn't worked, turn your attention to  your flooring.

It sets the tone for the room and if it lacks personality,  it can take the whole vibe of the room to a low level. Changing something  about your flooring can completely transform how the room looks.

There is  so much you can fo with flooring including 3D effects on vinyl, using  reclaimed wood, innovative designs, and things like that can make the floor  your focal point.

Quick Take on Material to Use

The type of flooring material you can choose has expanded over the years. You no longer have to choose between simple floorboards or carpet.

There is now a multitude of choices that are eco-friendly, stylish, and durable materials.

These materials include resin, which is made from chemical interactions with two polymers and concrete. The material made is a tough floor that is non-slip. Vinyl is another material that is growing in popularity. It's a practical and attractive choice due to its slip-resistant nature and its warmth.

Reclaimed wood is another hot trend that's blowing up on the market nowadays due to its vintage feel. It can come from anything from old retail flooring, old wine crates, wooden pallets, and old gym floors.

A Few of the Ways You Can Transform Your Floors

1. Create Continuity

If you connect the flooring from one room to another or from an indoor space to an outdoor space, your rooms will look bigger.

If you have doors that fold or patio doors, it's extremely important that you have continuity from your patio to your interior.

An example for this would be having panel flooring inside and decking outside.

Both have a wooden and warm look that blend seamlessly when they're facing the same direction. This continuity will remain as long as the panels are going the same direction, so you can even switch up the colors for the spaces.

2. Other Materials to Imitate Wood

Ceramic tiles can imitate wood if you want the wooden look but don't want actual wood floors. These ceramic tiles can look exactly like wooden boards but can be made in different colors, so you can have your own personality on them. Beside ceramic tiles, you can get the wooden look from laminate, vinyl planks, bamboo, and classic linoleum.

3. Bring Nature Inside

Vinyl is a great material for indoors because it's durable and eco-friendly.

It can transform your floors by creating a flow from the outdoors to the interior of the home. Pair this with strategically placed plants you'll have a room that is comfortable and in tune with nature enough to not be too much.

4. Go for the Industrial Look with Concrete

Concrete is growing in popularity due to its easy cleaning methods and because it's on trend.

Many people are going for an industrial look and concrete will help you achieve that. If you don't want to commit to concrete but still wish to get the industrial look than you can substitute for vinyl. Vinyl gives you a similar look, but it has many more advantages. If you went with concrete flooring than you would need to take extra steps to ensure that it's sealed properly to prevent mildew from growing when moisture penetrates its surface.

Vinyl doesn't have this issue and is both warm to the touch and soft.

Vinyl can also be used to create a retro feel and be incorporated in a multitude of designs, whether it be a 1950s kitchen or diner. You can get bright colors to contrast with walls and mix and match the flooring.

5. Speaking of Retro, Ceramic Tiles Are Up to the Job

Ceramic is also a good choice in flooring if you're looking to accomplish either the retro or the industrial style for your room.

Retro patterns on your floor can work extremely well with industrial looking furniture which tends to incorporate fabrics such as leather with different types of metals. Tiles have the power to be starring roles in your interior and can be used throughout the house including in bathrooms, hallways, and kitchens. If used in the living room, they could make a statement.

They can also bring an impact to your room if they're different patterns, shapes, or colors are used.

With ceramic tile, you have endless possibilities at being creative. If you're bold, you can even mix pattern to create a unique design that is truly your own. If you're not into retro or industrial, tiles always work well in traditional types of interiors.

6. Classical Is Always Classy

Interior designs that are styled to look classical, drawing influence from the grand homes that can be found throughout Europe, are also gaining a huge following in renovation crowds. These homes tend to match eclectic furniture made from dark wood with opulent fabrics and ceramic tile floors that are patterned.

If you truly wish to draw inspiration from the Victorian Era, then the ideal choice for the patterns on the tile would be monochrome. Colors that complement each other like grey and cream, or more popularly black and white, would be the choice for rooms like the kitchen.

These colors lend themselves extremely well to modern kinds of interiors as well.

Having your tiles injected with some color can add a Mediterranean twist to your room and make it feel like a kitchen from a country like Spain or Italy. Having tiles in colors like reds, blues, and greens are very striking and make a statement for any room that they're in.

They also are a great way to transform a dull and tired space as they give the room an immediate uplift.

There are tiles that draw influence from the Mediterranean with their en-caustic effect and intricate details.

Important to Remember

As you're on the hunt for ways to make your flooring stand out and brighten the whole room, be sure to remember the style you like and what purpose you're using the room floor.

While it's nice to be trendy, you don't want concrete on the ground where your family plays game night. Small changes can do enough to transform your whole room.

How To Make Allen and Roth Closet Ventilated Shelf Easily

How To Make Allen and Roth Closet Ventilated Shelf Easily

Are you looking for an extra Allen and Roth closet ventilated shelf?

You are not alone. Many of Lowe’s customers who bought Allen Roth closet tower have been asking us where to buy extra shelves.

We did a research and now, I have two news for you. One is good and another is bad.

The bad news is that Lowe's does not make any extra shelves for Allen and Roth closet tower. Looks like they had it in the past but then, for some reason, they pulled the plug on it.

The good news is that it is pretty easy to make one out of a ventilated shelf that is sold as a standalone product. It requires minimum DIY skills and can even be outsourced to a local renovation store.

Let's see how to do it.

Tools You Need

In order to do this project, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • a ventilated shelf 16'' wide:

John Louis Home shelf kit containing 2 shelves 16'' wide and 24'' long

  • four 5mm shelf pins; the type depends on what path you decide to choose: with groove cuts or without:
  • a saw
  • sand paper
  • a groove cutter - optional

BTW, you do not have to cut the wood yourself.

If you are not comfortable with wood cutting, go to your local renovation store and ask them to do it for you.

You can buy an Allen and Roth ventilated shelf online or at Lowe's if you need a particular color.

John Louis Home is another brand that makes ventilated closet towers. These shelves can be also reused for this project. John Louis Home shelves come with shelf pins but you cannot reuse them for your project. These shelf pins are round while we need ones that are flattened on one end.

The shelf you bought in the previous step fits the closet tower width (16'') but it's too long.

The shortest version of the Allen and Roth ventilated shelf is 46'' and John Louis Home one is 24'' (the kit contains 2 shelves.) In both cases, you can make at least two closet tower shelves out of each package regardless what brand you choose.

In order to shorten the self, measure 21'' from one end. Then, use a saw to cut off the excess. Sand any rough edges that may appear.

(Optional) Make grooves

The original Allen Roth closet tower shelves have tiny round stopped grooves on each corner for shelf pins.

Groove is a long, narrow cut or depression, especially one made to guide motion or receive a corresponding ridge.

You do not have to do the work yourself. If you are not comfortable with wood cutting, go to your local renovation store and ask them to do it for you.

It secures the shelves in place.  If you want to make sure your DIY shelf is not loose resting on shelf pins, you can make grooves, too.

Cut one groove on each corner of the shelf on the bottom of the shelf planks.

This step is completely optional and can be omitted.

Now that you cut your shelf, it's time to place it in the closet tower. In order to do that, you will need shelf pins.

The type of the pins depends on whether you made the grooves or not. If you do not go with the grooves, I would recommend using flat pegs pins with vinyl coat. Otherwise, you should use regular shelf pins with a flat end.

Now, insert the shelf pins level in the closet tower on the desired height. Then, rest the shelf on top of the pins.

Voila, your closet tower's got a new shelf!

Can you use LED bulbs in regular fixtures?

Can you use LED bulbs in regular fixtures? 7 things you need to know

We often receive emails from you, dear readers, with a question if you can put LED bulbs in regular lighting fixtures.

In this post, we will cover the question and will also talk about 7 things you should know about before switching to eco-friendly and long lasting LEDs.

Can you use LED bulbs in regular fixtures?

The short (and simple) answer is yes.

It is true as long as the LED bulbs you plan to install use less wattage than the max wattage allowed by the fixture.

When you see a description of a bulb state “100-Watt LED equivalent” that does not mean that the bulb truly consumes 100 Watts. It simply means that the bulb generates an amount of light equivalent to a 100-Watt incandescent bulb.

In fact, such LED bulb would consume only 15-20 Watt.

Refer to the table below (via cnet.com) to find out how LEDs bulbs compare with incandescent ones in terms of light output and wattage:

      LUMENS

INCANDESCENT

          LED

2600 lm

150 W

25-28 W

1600 lm

100 W

16 - 20 W

1100 lm

75 W

9-13 W

800 lm

60 W

8-12 W

450 lm

40 W

6-9 W

A real 60-Watt LED bulb would be an equivalent of a 300-Watt incandescent bulb. This would be a very bright light! Thus, if your fixture says “not to exceed 60-Watts” but you want to use a 100-Watt equivalent LED bulb, this would be a safe thing to do.

7 things you need to know when switching to LED bulbs

LED bulbs are easy and convenient to use but they have their small tricks and secrets.

1

Use a special type of LEDs in recessed, enclosed, or semi-enclosed fixtures

Since LED bulbs use fewer watts, they produce dramatically less heat than their incandescent cousins.

However, it still means LED bulbs do get hot. The heat may damage the bulb so it needs to be pulled away. This is a job of a heat sink, a special part of the base of the bulb. The sink diffuses the heat into the air helping the LED bulb not only stay cold but also fulfilling its promise of a super-long life.

That's why you need to consider where you place your LED bulbs.

If you have fully or semi-enclosed fixtures, search for LEDs that are designed for recessed or enclosed locations.

Examples of enclosed fixtures:

2

Use a special type of LEDs with dimmable switches

The common dimmer technology is designed to work with incandescent lights and it is not always compatible with LED bulbs. Some dimmer switches are designed to have a minimum load requirement to work. When those switches are connected to the very energy-efficient LEDs, the dimmers won’t operate at all.

The solution is to use dimmable LED bulbs. Such bulbs must be clearly marked as dimmable. There are plenty of them available on the market; you just need to choose which shape and light color you want. Even Edison style filaments can be an LED!

And the evolution of the technology does not stop there.

Randall Whitehead, a well known professional lighting designer and author, writes on lightinganddecormag.com about a new type of dimmable LEDs called "warm dim." These lights appear to get warmer than dimmed.

Such bulbs seem like a perfect choice for a romantic dinner with an eco conscious (or just LED loving) partner!

Can you use led bulbs in regular fixtures: Dimmable leds
3

Pay more upfront, get more return over time

One of the very few cons of LED bulbs is that these bulbs are pricier than the regular ones. If you need a dimmable LED bulb or one that works in an enclosed fixture, the price may go even higher.

For comparison, a 60-Watt incandescent bulb costs meager 79c at Walmart. Meanwhile, an equivalent LED bulb costs from a couple of dollars to $30-40 on Amazon.

However, what you get in return is a much longer life with significantly reduced expenses.

For example, comparing to incandescent lights, the life span of LED bulbs is from 3 to whopping 25 times longer according to energy.gov. This results in an impressive life from a few to more than ten years for each LED bulb (depending on your light usage as mentioned on integral-led.com.)

Also, most of the high-priced LED bulbs have extra features such as a WiFi controlled switch or Alexa compatible module. These are high tech devices built around a regular bulb.

Don't shy away of LEDs because of their price. Instead, consider them as being an investment.

Can you use led bulbs in regular fixtures: LEDs as investment
4

Pay attention to the light color

While incandescent bulbs produce yellowish light, LED bulbs come in a specter of various colors. It ranges from yellowish to match regular bulbs to more white (bright white) to blue-ish that is more close to natural daylight.

If you need a light bulb for a regular room, you may want to choose an LED bulb that gives a softer warm light. For an office or a reading spot, you may want to go with a cooler, more blue-ish LED light.

While choosing the LED light color, refer to this picture via www.earthled.com to get an idea what light color you may need:

Can you use led bulbs in regular fixtures: Choosing a Proper Color Temperature for your next LED Bulb
5

Also pay attention to lumens in addition to wattage

When dealing with the brightness of an LED bulb, you should think lumens in addition to watts. As a common benchmark, an 800 lumen LED bulb produces the same amount of light as a conventional incandescent 60-Watt light bulb. However, the LED consumes only 10 watts.

Do you want to use something even brighter?

Not a problem.

The 150W LED equivalent delivers about 2,600 lumens while using only around 30 Watts. That means you could install a 150W LED equivalent bulb in a 60W fixture and get more than 3 times the light than your old 60-Watt incandescent bulb.

6

Improve your mood with a brighter light and home

Did you know that bright light can improve low mood and even help to battle with depression?

In 2013, Journal of Psychiatry & Neuroscience published a study showing how bright and dim light affects the levels of dopamine in our bodies which in its turn affects our mood.

Also, bright light can sometimes replace antidepressants. According to the study conducted in 2011 at the VU University Medical Center in Amsterdam and mentioned on well.blogs.nytimes.com, a positive effect of bright light therapy helped the research participants improve mood without any medications. Apart from that, their sleeping got also better.

All this goodness with no side effects!

Since the LED technology allows you to install more luminous bulbs in the same sockets, you can make your home even brighter than before - and improve your mood with no extra cost.

Brighter home, better mood!

7

Get what you paid for

While you can find relatively cheap LED bulbs, you should remember that you get what you paid for.

LED bulbs are quite similar to consumer electronics in terms of quality.

If you want your LED to provide an expected light output as well as function properly, you need to make sure all of its components are manufactured to last. To achieve that, it's always a good idea to buy from a company you're confident in. Cheap LEDs may give less light than expected or produce the light color that is unpleasant for an eye.

Care Instructions For Teak Outdoor Furniture: 5 Simple Tips

In addition to be one of the highest quality materials on the market for patio furniture, teak patio furniture doubles as one of the easiest types to care for! It’s by far one of my favorite materials for patio furniture due to the natural oils present in the wood, which help keep out termites and moisture.

To maintain the beautiful natural color of the wood, your teak patio furniture must be well taken care of, but I promise it’s not hard! I’ve compiled a list of my favorite tips to help you keep your teak looking beautiful for years to come.

Avoid Teak Oil

I know this might sound crazy, but hear me out! The teak oil sold on the market is not actually teak oil at all, even though it’s marketed as such. It’s a mix of linseed oil and other solvents that aren’t any good for your teak patio furniture. I try to avoid using teak oil on my own furniture if I can help it. While it does brighten the color in the short term, it doesn’t do it any good in the long run.

Adding extra oil to your teak furniture isn’t recommended because it depletes the natural oils already present in the wood. This will make the color of your wood fade faster. Adding oil doesn’t increase the structural strength of the wood, either. Therefore, I’d recommend staying away from using oil on your teak patio furniture.

Treat with Teak Sealer Instead

Care Instructions For Teak Outdoor Furniture: SealerYour teak patio furniture will only need one teak sealer treatment a year to keep it in top condition. However, it provides a ton of benefits just from one yearly application! Teak sealant is designed to lock in the natural oils the wood possesses. This helps keep your teak looking bright and new for a much longer period.

If you decide later that you’re all right with letting your teak fade into the equally as beautiful grey color, you can simply stop using teak sealer treatments. Over time the oils will evaporate from the wood. This causes the gradual change in color.

Clean Up Spills as They Happen

When you’re outside entertaining, if you’re anything like me and my family, there’s bound to be spills and mishaps. If you wipe away any spills as they happen, you lower the chances of staining your teak patio furniture. Always keep a cloth or rag handy when you’re eating and drinking around your patio furniture.

If you spill grease or something that may stain the teak furniture, wipe it off as soon as you notice. A slightly damp washcloth can work wonders for this. If your furniture does end up with a stain, however, try using something to soak up the stain over a period. That should help reduce or eliminate the appearance of the stain.

Basic Cleaning Works Just Fine

Since teak patio furniture is so sturdy, it can last for years without extensive cleaning. However, to keep it in the best possible condition, you should clean it regularly. A simple cleaning can do a world of wonders for the look and feel of your teak patio furniture. Soapy water can be used to clean the dirt and dust from your furniture with no complications.

However, I like to use a teak cleaner on my own teak patio furniture because it’s specifically made to keep teak clean. Most formulas will both brighten the look of the wood and clean it at the same time. That cuts my care time down significantly – especially if I clean my furniture on a sunny day and let the sun dry it for me!

Use a Patio Furniture Cover

Care Instructions For Teak Outdoor Furniture: CoversEven though teak patio furniture can be left outside all year round, it’s best to use a cover when the weather gets severe to protect your furniture from nature’s worst. A good patio furniture cover that’s high-quality and waterproof can greatly improve the lifespan of your furniture. If you do use a cover, make sure that it doesn’t trap moisture to prevent mildew from occurring.

I especially recommend using a patio furniture cover during the winter months. It helps protect your teak patio furniture, plus it stays relatively clean for use in the spring. I can quickly wipe my furniture down when it’s time for spring cleaning and be good to go for a barbecue in no time.

As you can see, taking care of teak patio furniture is a breeze. It’s one of the strongest and most durable materials you can use for patio furniture and it can last generations when taken care of correctly. There’s also very little upkeep on the cleaning side – once a year you can apply a teak sealant and be good to go! I highly recommend it because not only is it sturdy, it’s also a beautiful wood that can tie together any patio.
